Steven and I have been married a year. I know, it's crazy. Not just crazy because how fast it went by but also crazy because I have been married a year. I cannot even say it without getting a huge cheesy grin. I do not even like the commitment of cable and phone contracts, but I am happily committed to my husband. So, I think it is important to know and remember the things that have happened during our first year of marriage. It is important to know how far we have come but also more importantly how much fun we have together.
Our first disagreement, I am 95% sure it was while we were packing the morning after our wedding. Steven, is not a morning person, by any means. I am more excited to see the morning than I am receiving a diamond ring, well, maybe not, but it is close. I was really excited to go see Addison and spend the day shopping in Charleston, who can blame a girl?
My first long term roommate. Steven moved in with me and Addison. That was hard, I have never lived with anyone before, that was a challenge. I had a hard time adjusting to that and being really accountable to to someone else. Before, it was just me. I wanted to go walk around the mall, I did. If Addison and I wanted to go have lunch at Panera, we did. You can see how this was a pretty big change, I had to make sure some football or basketball game was not on. If a game was on, I knew either, to leave the house or to make sure to go somewhere Steven would not want to go during that time. You can see the challenges I faced.
Steven, had to adjust to my bad habits. For example, I wash my hands and dry them off. In my house, a paper towels life does not end with simply being used to dry hands. I set the towel down at some various, yet handy, place do a few other things then I will come back and use the paper towel do wipe something up, or dry my hands again. There can be anywhere from 5-7 handy white balled up paper towels at any give time. They are always near when I need them and have never failed me. Paper towels get a very good life at our house. However, Steven will go through the kitchen or dining room and collect my little white balled up handy towels and THROW THEM AWAY!?!?! Why would anyone do that? Can you believe how I feel when I am cooking and then I just KNOW I have a paper towel lying around somewhere and then poof, it is gone. It makes me crazy, I feel sad, that paper towel could have gotten at least 4-6 more good uses before succumbing to the big white can. I am proud to say, we have reached an agreement. Steven puts them in a pile for me somewhere in the kitchen, I like to say he corals the little white balls to a manageable area, always to be found. I have also started to train Addison to reuse paper towels, the cycle continues folks.
We had our first real "family crisis" a few months after our wedding. Steven's dad was diagnosed with cancer. This was really hard for him, I was at work when he found out. I came home immediately. Steven is pretty close to Phil, so this was something that was hard to swallow. I just continued to reassure him I really believed it was all going to work out. I did not know but just felt being positive was easier than being negative about it and it sure was not going to hurt anything by being positive. Phil's cancer was pretty advanced and the odds were certainly not in his favor but prayer, good thoughts, faith, and support were really all I could do, do that is what I did. This was not an easy feat, there are many who do not understand positive thinking and always "prepare" for the worst. My philosophy is focus on the positive, prepare all you can for the worst case and then go back to being positive and move on. Happy to report: Phil is now cancer free.
We got our first dog, Wojo. Yes, it is for Wojohowski the coach and former player at Duke. This dog is crazy. Steven and I have never had a dog before and I am pretty sure it was training for a one day child. He was a cute 7 lbs when we brought him home, he currently weighs about 75 lbs. he runs around the house like a crazy person but he is also the funniest animal. He is 100% a part of our family now, we debated on keeping him for a while, well, I did, but the dog won.
First REAL experience with long term compromises, it is amazing the things that "do not bother you" until the other person makes a decision. That is frustrating, Steven never expreeses an opinon regarding decor to bedding etc. That is until I buy something. I do not ask him questions about wether Madden 2013 (or whatever) was really the best video game to buy. You know, I am a good woman. I do not ask questions, Madden you want? Sure, go ahead. Just do not ask me why we needed a new placemats. I will stay in my teritorry, you stay in yours. It works.
We learned how to talk! Not in the normal way, but in the "normal" way. Steven is very very loud, ugh! Even writing this makes my ears hurt. He has a twin brother and I dont know if just one or more boys together are loud, but they are both loud, at least to my standard. His normal tone is like my raised voice. When he gets excited or animated about something, up his voice goes. It can be a story he has waited to tell me since lunch that day or a story he heard on ESPN and as the story goes on the louder he gets. I always say, "Oh my gosh, please do not yell", he just laughs. He thinks I am too quiet. I am terrified that one day our children are going to be loud. I am afraid I am going to be in a house full of loud people. We are working on this.
I realize he is a guy, and I let him be a guy. I am pretty laid back in many ways but I think it is easy to do when you have someone you love and who loves you, unconditionally.
Our first year, the most important thing we learned was our marriage will be what we make it. If we make it an expenseive steak dinner, it will be. On the other hand it could be Hamburger helper. People would ask us "how is it being a newly wed?" Well, sir or madame, it is life. There are good days, there are bad days, but it is real. We take each day as it comes, we laugh, we simply treasure each moment. We make Addison and each other the focus of our life, we make it a point to have dinner together each night, the weekends are family time. I think if we can some how manage to try daily we will be okay. There will be highs and lows but I think if we can maintain a balance, we are good to go. I have been treated like a princess in my family, I do not have any sisters and grew up with a bunch of guy cousins, he treats me like I am the princess, so it works.
